Inspiring Wildcat Pride
The long and storied tradition of Northwestern sports received a ringing endorsement recently from Red Sok (singular?) Curt Schilling. Last week, in a spring training report in the Boston Metro, the Schill was quoted following his first exhibition outing as saying:
“I was nervous and short of breath and all the things I normally am whether I’m facing Northwestern or the Yankees.”
That’s right, two-time World Series champ Curt Schilling went out of his way to mention the anxiety that would overcome him if he were to face the Northwestern Wildcats.
He could have mentioned any of the handful of local universities or colleges such as Harvard, MIT, BC, BU, or NorthEASTern, none of which has ever been regarded as a baseball powerhouse. But no, he felt compelled to crown Northwestern, a school 1,000 miles away, as the antithesis of all that the Yankees represent in the lore of baseball. He obviously has never heard the sound of 7,000 sets of jingling keys.
